Why Wocument exists

To make every long read on the web look as if it was designed for the screen it is on.

It started on a campus.

Wocument started with a wish: college students wanted to document what happens at their institution the way a well-made publication would, with features, interviews, photo essays and a front page, and have people read it.

They had three choices, all poor. A blog made every story look the same. A PDF from a design tool looked right and was impossible to read on a phone. A website built by hand needed a designer and a developer for every issue, and the issue died when they graduated.

A story works only when it is read. Layout is how it gets read.

So we built a fourth: write the story once, and have it set with the care of print on any screen. The same three poor choices face marketers, storytellers, newsrooms and anyone who publishes long-form on the web, so Wocument is for them too.

Wocument does one thing: it sets your story, with care in every line. Simple to write. Considered to the last line.

What we believe.

Layout is part of the story.
Where a picture sits and how a column ends change how far people read.
The screen is its own medium.
A screen has a width, a height and a scroll, and a page should be built for all three.
Good design should be the default.
Most people never adjust a setting, so the defaults are the design.
Stories should be immersive.
If something happened, the reader should be able to see and hear it while they read.
Fewer, better options.
One considered answer beats a panel of fifty settings.
Readable by everyone.
Real text in reading order, for people, screen readers, search engines and assistants.
